PHOENIX ACQUIRES STYLACATS

Bromborough, Wirral, Merseyside, UK, 23 December, 2005 --- Phoenix Chemicals today announces the acquisition of the assets and intellectual property of Stylacats Limited.  The purchase includes the complete library of catalyst  ligands which Stylacats has developed during the previous 5 years.

The acquisition supplements the company’s existing continuous high-pressure hydrogenation technology where Phoenix aims to develop a separate business unit focusing on catalysis-based asymmetric hydrogenation.

Phoenix Chemicals has expertise in continuous processing and began life in 1991.  Today the company is regarded as one of the leading experts in this field with commercialised continuous technologies in handling difficult reactions including diazomethane, cyanation, nitroalkanes, high pressure hydrogenation and azides.

Commenting on the acquisition, Mr Colin Leece, the company’s General Manager said:

“The Stylacats ligands will fit nicely into our existing continuous hydrogenation assets and places us as one of the few fine chemical manufacturers which have their own ligand library.  We are committed to developing our asymmetric hydrogenation business and a number of these ligands have good commercial potential”.

LORD SAINSBURY TO OPEN NEW PHOENIX FACILITY ON 30 JANUARY 2004

click to enlargeBromborough, Wirral, Merseyside, UK, 27 January 2004 --- Phoenix Chemicals today announces the visit of Lord Sainsbury, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Science and Innovation, on 30th January 2004 to open the company’s new continuous asymmetric reduction facility.

The continuous facility, the first of its kind in the world, is constructed of very expensive alloy and uses advanced computer software in its control system. With a novel catalyst system at high pressure, products are produced in fewer stages and very economically.

This asymmetric reduction facility will be applied to a number of products including the manufacture of a key intermediate for statin drugs, a class of cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Phoenix is a fine chemical company that specializes in developing novel technologies to produce pharmaceutical intermediates, providing low cost manufacturing solutions and overcoming difficult chemistries.

THE RT HON MARGARET BECKETT MP TO OPEN NEW PHOENIX FACILITY ON 13 JUNE 2000

click to enlargeBromborough, Wirral, Merseyside, UK, 10 June 2000. Phoenix Chemicals today announces the visit of The Rt Hon Margaret Beckett MP, President of the Council and Leader of the House of Commons, on 13 June 2000 to open the company’s new Diazomethane Production Facility.

The new continuous diazomethane production facility is for the manufacture of specialist pharmaceutical and fine chemical products. This first phase was completed in March 2000. It is anticipated that the second phase will come on line in September 2000.

Using continuous chemical processing, Phoenix believes it has developed novel and patentable technology for safely producing high purity diazomethane on a commercial scale in a system that maintains the process inventory of diazomethane at very low levels at all times. The plant, which incorporates some of the very latest monitoring, control and safety systems, is capable of producing over 60 metric tonnes of diazomethane per annum and will supplement the company'’ existing diazomethane pilot facility.

The diazomethane facility is part of a £7m capital investment at its site in Bromborough, Wirral, UK that includes a new pharmaceutical handling and isolation facility designed to handle toxic solids, which is linked to a Class 100,000 finishing/drying suite.

Phoenix is a fine chemical company that specialises in developing novel technologies to produce pharmaceutical intermediates, providing low cost manufacturing solutions and overcoming difficult chemistries.

As a result of the opening of this facility six temporary employees have been given permanent contracts. Mrs Beckett will meet with some of these during her tour. There are also plans to recruit 4 new members of staff.

Phoenix Announces The Completion Of A Continuous Diazomethane Production Facility

Bromborough, Wirral, Merseyside, UK, 4 February 2000 --- Phoenix Chemicals today announces the completion of a continuous diazomethane production facility to manufacture specialist pharmaceutical and fine chemical products.

Diazomethane is an extremely useful methylating agent with a wide range of possible uses in chemical synthesis.  Its highly toxic and potentially explosive properties have however limited many of its commercial applications.  Using continuous chemical processing, Phoenix believes it has developed novel and patentable technology for safely producing high purity diazomethane on a commercial scale in a system that maintains the process inventory of diazomethane at very low levels at all times.  The plant, which incorporates some of the very latest monitoring, control and safety systems, is capable of producing over 60 metric tonnes of diazomethane per annum and will supplement the company's existing diazomethane pilot facility.

The diazomethane facility is part of a £7m capital investment at its site in Bromborough, Wirral, UK that includes a new pharmaceutical handling and isolation facility designed to handle toxic solids, which is linked to a Class 100,000-finishing/drying suite.

Phoenix , which was acquired from Meconic Plc in 1999, provides engineered solutions to chemical problems and specialises in the safe handling of hazardous reactions through continuous processing systems.  In addition to diazomethane, the company has expertise in the safe handling of azides, hydrazoic acid, hydrazine, bis(chloromethyl) ether, diborane and nitroalkanes.

Phoenix Goes Chiral

Phoenix Chemicals Announces Continuous Asymmetric Reduction Technology

Bromborough, Wirral, Merseyside, UK, 20 February 2003 --- Phoenix Chemicals today announces the commissioning of a new continuous high pressure hydrogenation facility for the asymmetric synthesis of chiral pharmaceutical intermediates.

The production of chiral intermediates via asymmetric synthesis through the use of BINAP-type catalysts is well known.  However, the mechanism is not always fully understood and processing is not always suitable to commercial production.  Additionally, these chiral catalysts are expensive and the reactions often require rigorous processing controls to achieve the desired enantiomeric excess (ee).

Continuous processing has a number of advantages over traditional batch manufacture.  Phoenix has applied its expertise in continuous processing to the problem of high pressure asymmetric reductions.  Using a pilot continuous unit commissioned in 2002, the company has substantially out-performed comparable batch systems in a variety of asymmetric chemical transformations.  Substrate to catalyst ratios of >80,000:1 with >98%ee have been consistently achieved.  The Company has secured an exclusive license to use a highly active variety of catalyst to perform such reactions.

The production plant, which is based on the pilot unit, incorporates some of the very latest monitoring, control and safety systems, can operate at over 3000psi and +200°C and produce over 100mt of chiral intermediates per annum.  The facility is part of a $1.5m capital investment at its site in Bromborough, Wirral, UK that includes a new product handling and isolation facility.

Typical reactions for this technology is in the reduction of the following compounds:

Phoenix is to apply its asymmetric reduction technology in a number of pharmaceutical compounds.

Phoenix Chemicals provides engineered solutions to chemical problems and specialises in the safe handling of difficult/problematic reactions through the innovative use of continuous processing.  In addition to the new high pressure hydrogenation facility, the company has expertise in the safe handling of diazomethane, azides, hydrazoic acid, hydrazine, bis(chloromethyl)ether and nitroalkanes.
